Getting through divorce without losing your mind

On Behalf of | Apr 30, 2015 | High Asset Divorce |

If you are considering divorce, you may be afraid that you are about to be subjected to a knock-down, drag out fight over property division, asset division and custody matters. While this may not eventually come to pass, knowing what you’re up against is key in preparing. After all, when you prepare for the worst, you can expect the best; and that is not just an old adage.

Essentially, you can anticipate legal issues before they become actual problems, which may lead to you saving time, money and of course, heartache during your divorce. This post will focus on some basic steps that can help you go through a divorce without losing your mind.

Get important financial documents in order – Despite the emotions that go through a divorce, it is ultimately a legal, orderly process for dividing marital assets. To be prepared for this, having an accurate view of assets and debts is necessary.  Knowing what you have and what you owe may make the process easier.

Leave your emotions out of it – As we alluded to earlier, a divorce is a business transaction, so you should treat it as such. Business transactions are supposed to be judged dispassionately, which may be easier said than done given the prior emotional relationship. So the less your emotions are involved, the more likely it is that the process will go smoothly and you can keep your sanity.

Leave the past in the past – Indeed, you may be harboring ill feelings if your soon-to-be ex cheated on you or is about to start a new life with someone else, but like the anthem in the movie “Frozen” it is better just to let it go.
