A better economy means more divorces

People often look at money as a cause for divorce, specifically when the couple does not have enough. Running into financial issues like not being able to pay the rent and living from one paycheck to the next puts a lot of stress on a marriage.

You can find plenty of examples of couples who ended their marriages because of financial stress. That is not to say that a better economy, with more money to go around, means that couples will settle in for a happy life together. In fact, studies have found that economic growth actually leads to an increase in the amount of divorces.

On top of that, earning a high wage does not protect you from divorce. You can still face plenty of financial stress. To a large degree, it depends on how you view and use your money. A lot of couples have expenses that are as high as their earnings. They still save very little and have the same financial stress that poorer couples have -- just at a different income bracket.

When you get into those higher income brackets, you also run into other stressors for a marriage. For instance, while a lot of lower-income workers both live in the same home and work nearby, many high-income workers have to travel across the country or the world. The couple may have more money, but they spend less time together, and that makes divorce more likely.

Are you thinking about divorce? Be sure you know what legal steps you'll need to take, particularly when a significant amount of assets are involved.
