What are your reproductive rights?

On Behalf of | Jan 30, 2017 | Family Law |

Reproductive rights are an individual’s rights whether they want to reproduce and maintain their reproductive health. This includes an individual’s right to plan or start a family, observe spacing, use of contraceptives or to terminate a pregnancy.

The right to abortion has become a largely controversial topic in recent years. Pro-choice advocates argue that abortion is a woman’s constitutional right. They argue that the choice of termination should lie with the woman and her doctor. On the other hand, pro-life advocates argue that a fetus is a living being and that abortion should be made illegal at all times. These opposing sides come head to head often, however, this continues to be a topic of discussion.

Reproduction rights have commonly been recognized as women’s rights. Male rights to reproduction especially in matters of abortion and procreation have been less clear. Inherently, the law must make sure that men and women are treated in the same way in these situations, which can be a problem in reproductive issues. However, organizations fighting for men’s reproductive rights demand male rights on matters of abortion, adoption, false paternity and rights to frozen embryos.

Male and female reproductive rights are a complex discussion likely to be further complicated by the constant technological advances. If you find yourself in a situation regarding such a matter, you should promptly seek the guidance of a family law attorney. A family law attorney should be able to answer your queries in accordance with the federal and state laws and help defend your rights accordingly.
