What are the benefits for same-sex couples who marry?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2015 | Same-Sex Partners |

With same-sex marriage recently becoming legal in all 50 states, many couples have been rushing to the altar. The number of same-sex marriages has continued to grow, as many couples are excited that they are finally able to tie the knot where and when they want. Many of them may be doing so because they are truly in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together, but they may also have considered the many benefits there are when getting married.

The following are examples of the many benefits of a same-sex couple entering a marriage:

  • Property rights.
  • Parental rights.
  • Ability to become a U.S. citizen.
  • Access to government benefits.

Those who are currently not married may consider doing so due to the many rights and benefits they will receive after becoming legally married to their partner. Just as a male and female couple entering into a marriage gain certain rights, a same-sex couple will gain these rights when they are married as well. Not only is this a good thing for same-sex couples, but it is also a good thing for the children they have, as there is a chance for both parents to share custody should a divorce occur.

Same-sex partners who have questions about their rights and marriage laws can contact an attorney. Certain situations may require them to follow a process that is different than opposite sex couples, so they should be prepared and seek legal assistance should they run into an issue. Depending on the circumstances, the issue may be easy to solve, but it would be wise to be prepared for anything that can be thrown your way.
