Opinions on same-sex marriage flipped in just 15 years

On Behalf of | Mar 4, 2020 | Same-Sex Partners |

In the last decade and a half, Americans have completely changed the way that they look at same-sex marriage. Their opinions on it totally flipped in the past 15 years.

Per the Pew Research Center, 60% of Americans were against same-sex marriage back in 2004, while just 31% said they were for it. By 2019, a similar study found that 31% were now against it, but a massive 61% supported it.

Remember, this doesn’t just mean that 61% didn’t oppose it the way that they once did. They did not feel neutral about it. Regardless of their own sexual orientation and their own relationships, they actively supported same-sex couples.

What is really surprising about this isn’t the fact that Americans stand behind same-sex marriage these days. You can see from the changes to the laws and attitudes in recent years that they support it. What is surprising is how fast things changed. To see the percentages not just shrink and grow but completely flip from one side to the other in only 15 years shows how dramatically different things are now.

It will also be interesting to take a similar poll in 10 or 15 years to see if this trend has continued. Will Americans get closer and closer to 100% support? As the young generation grows up and becomes adults, what will their views on same-sex marriage look like since they’re growing up in a much different world than their parents?

As things shift and change, it is crucial for these couples to understand the new rights they have under current marriage laws.
