3 questions and answers about same-sex adoption

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2018 | Same-Sex Partners |

As same-sex marriage becomes more widely recognized, many couples in the United States are interested in adopting in order to expand their families. The adoption process can be difficult for any couple, so it is very important for all those who are interested to understand as much as possible about that process. To that end, here are three common questions and answers.

1. How many same-sex couples adopt children?

Of course, it is hard to know how many children really have gay or lesbian parents because they are not always open about their sexual orientation, but reports do indicate that anywhere from 8 million to 10 million kids currently live in households with same-sex parents.

2. How many people actually identify as transgendered, bisexual, lesbian or gay?

Again, statistics do not always tell the whole story, as they can only look at people who openly proclaim their sexual orientation. However, one poll determined that about 3.8 percent of all people in the United States fall into this category. This means there are a high number of potential adoptive parents.

3. Is same-sex adoption legal in Indiana?

Yes, it is. The adoption process became legal in every state in America in 2016. Some states did try to counter this ruling, but the federal government found that denying these rights to same-sex couples was unconstitutional. All states must allow adoption.

Are you interested in adopting a child? This is a big step to take, and it can be incredibly fulfilling to give a child a loving home. It is also complex, though, so make sure you know what legal steps you need to take.
