More than 400 parents to receive child support from state

More than 400 parents are set to receive some amount of child support from the state of Nebraska, according to a report from the Omaha World-Herald. The state is issuing $250,292 in child support to the parents. The offer of money will come from the state Department of Health and Human Services. Letters will be sent out to the parents who are set to receive the money.

According to an official from the department, the money belongs to parents who had their payments collected while their children were in the custody of the state. The funds were originally supposed to help pay for the care of those children while with the state and excess money was to be sent to the parents named as recipients of the child support.

Instead of this happening, the money continued to build over a period of 20 years and reached $1.1 million in December of 2016. The administrator could not give an explanation as to why the money was never sent to the proper parents, just that staff said they were never told to make it a priority. The administrator discovered the fund back in 2015 when he started working with the department. He then assigned staff members to the project of finding out where the money was supposed to be sent.

It was determined that the bulk of the money was owed to the department for the care of the children while under state custody. The remaining money was found to belong to 431 parents. The average amount owed is $580 and the largest amount owed is $6,940.

The accrual of funds in the state award child support account was just one of many issues named in an audit of the Nebraska child support collection system conducted by the office of the state auditor.
