Three questions to ask when first meeting a divorce attorney

It is no secret that preparing for a divorce can be an emotionally taxing experience. This is especially true if the service of a divorce petition comes so unexpectedly. Once this happens, you must quickly find an attorney and prepare for the process yourself.

But when you haven’t had to hire a lawyer before, you may be a bit lost in choosing one. You may not know what to ask or understand what is entailed in a divorce. After all, you are not expected to know what is entailed in a divorce, and what you have heard in other divorces may not apply to yours.

With that, we find it prudent to help our readers with some typical questions that should be asked during an initial consult with a divorce attorney.

What can I expect during the process? – Like the old adage “if you prepare for the worst, you can expect the best,” knowing what to expect through the process can help alleviate some fears.  So it is okay to ask about what to expect so that you don’t run into any surprises.

What will happen to my kids – Invariably, a divorce will include a custody battle. In an initial consultation, an attorney can advise you of your options for keeping the children or arranging for a peaceful transition to a shared custody situation.

Are there additional fees I will be responsible for? – It is difficult to determine in an initial consult how much the final cost will be in your divorce. However, asking the question can help in understanding how much you may have to have in your warchest to prepare for a fight.
